Vicuña occurs in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Peru. The species range covers an area of ca. 250,000 km². The numbers increase. The main threat is poaching.
■ Captive population data are recorded in International Vicuña Studbook since 1969. The studbook is kept by Zoo Zürich.
■ Within EAZA, a Vicuña EEP (Endangered Species Programme) was established in 1985, it is coordinated by Zoo Zürich.
■ Listed in Appendix I of Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES, or Washington Convention).
