Let's look for European Tree Frog
2019.05.08.

Riga Zoo has decided to collect data on European Tree Frog (Hyla arborea) current distribution in Latvia. The species has been reestablished in Latvia in 1990ies, thanks to the reintroduction project performed by Riga Zoo.

Now Riga Zoo calls everybody to help by reporting known Tree Frog sites in Latvia. The best indication of Tree Frog presence is its song that can be heard on warm nights from late April to June.

How to identify the song of the Eiropean Tree Frog?

If you have heard a singing Tree Frog, or seen one, please report by e-mail to kokvardes@gmail.com, or give a call to +371 29294858. Please report the location of Tree Frog site and add your phone number, for Riga Zoo amphibian experts to be able to contact you back and explore the site.

Please note that the objective of this inquiry is only research, and no restrictions on land use etc. will be applied in newly reported Tree Frog sites.

European Tree Frog is widely distributed in the Southern Europe. It was considered extinct in Latvia since the end of the 19th century. In 1988 Riga Zoo started the reintroduction project in Kurzeme, Western Latvia. Since then the species had spread around the release site (Blažģa ezers). Around the beginning of the 21st century Tree Frog songs have been heard elsewhere in southwest of Kurzeme, including Bunka, Vecpils, Kalvene, Vaiņode, and in many other locations. Riga Zoo now seeks to establish the current species range that may be expanded even more and reached Skrunda, Kuldīga, Pāvilosta, Durbe, Grobiņa, Rucava, and elsewere.
